Community based activities

Opening Doors is keen to build partnerships with community based migrant service providers in and around the Canberra region.

A successful partnership is ongoing with the Goulburn Multicultural Centre (GMC). GMC offers settlement support to newly arrived refugees residing regionally in Goulburn. The  community in Goulburn includes young refugee migrants from Liberia, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

An Inspiring Australia grant has enable young refugee migrants from Goulburn to participate in several science communication programs around Canberra since October 2012. These programs have been offered by Opening Doors in conjunction with The Australian National University’s Student Equity Office. Opening Doors continues to evaluate longitudinally the Goulburn participants’ attitudes to Australian scientific culture as part of their settlement.

Other interested community based migrant service providers in Australia are invited to partner with Opening Doors. Please direct all enquries to Dr Sean Perera.
